| Here
is my collection of green dial Seiko watches. They are all
automatic movements, which means that they are mechanical and
self-winding. Each one has a weighted rotor that swings as you
move your wrist, and that motion acts to wind the watch. Very
inventive! Seiko didn't actually invent the automatic
self-winding movement, (that was done at Patek Phillippe in 1863,)
however the best Seikos are the
ones with automatic movements. Oh sure, they have some kind of
quartz-mechanical hybrid out now called the Spring Drive, but I am not
a convert over to that philosophy yet. I tend to look down on
quartz movements, because there is just something special about
a mechanical movement. It's like appreciating a car without fuel
injection or all that Emissions Control crap they tack on.
There's something pure about say, a 1965 Ford Mustang, compared with your modern hot hatchback. Call me old fashioned. |
