What
can I say? The Peugeot company is well known for
making gears
that grind. (Pardon, le joke') This particular pepper mill is made of hard maple, the same kind they make
into baseball bats, and it has a pretty decent grinding mechanism.
You fill it by unscrewing a nut and removing the top. There
is a catch at the bottom to keep the grinding gear from coming out when
you open the pepper mill. The nut at the top does dual duty, it holds the
grinder together, and it adjusts the consistency and size of the pepper.
Note:
Do not tighten the nut all the way! It will smash the grinding
teeth into the housing and leave no space for the pepper to get
through. The idea is to have a SPACE between the grinder bit and the
housing, so the pepper gets crushed between the gears. You don't want to crush the gears themselves.
Owning
a good pepper grinder says that you are serious about cooking.
Its like having a good pair of shoes for work. You are
going to have this thing for 20 years, unless you run it over with your
car or something. Yes, I know that $50 for a pepper grinder is a
lot. Pull yourself together. People with class and
sophistication buy the French pepper grinder. Repeat after me: "I deserve a good pepper grinder."
